The poqomchies
Dominator of Guatemala

The poqomchies, like the poqomames are descendants of the same branch: the "nim poqom" The expension of the achies was the principal cause for the dispersion of the nim poqom. It is probable that the poqom dominated the centre of Guatemala 20 centuries before.

In the 16 century, the territory of the poqomchi' was uge and going from San Christobal Verapaz to Santa Ana in Peten.

The 94714 people speaking the language are living in the area of 5 municipalities of Alta Verapaz and one of Quiche.

4% of the mayan population speak the language. San Christobal Verapaz and Tactic are the more developped cities of the territory poqomchi'. In San Christobal, they celebrate the Semana Santa with spendor. The Catholic church is colonial and was built on a centre of ceremonies mayas.

In tactic they make waist looms and artesania in silver. They make red huipiles too. The poqomchies are good for manual works with clay, silver and wood.

In the area live the traditional narrators known as "Aj q'oral re'najtiir laj b'anooj". They are respected old persons for the verastibility of their stories and their vaste knowledges. One of the legend is the one of the "Pozo Vivo" in Tactic. According to the legend, a beautiful woman fall into the well and couldn't get out because the Esprit of the water falled in love with her. Since then the well looks like it's boiling and it becames a turistic attraction.
