Descendent of brave warriors, the Kaqchikels are living in 7 departments of agriculture and artisanal activities.
Before the spanish conquest, the politic centre of the Kaqchikels was Iximche, a fortress which is now in Tecpan close to Chimaltenango.
They were allies with the Spaniards in the war against the ki'ches, but then turned against the Spaniards in two insurrections in the first half of the 16 century. Today the language Kaqchikel is spoken by 343 000 personas.
They are living in more than 30 municipalities of Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango, Solola, Suchitepequez and some areas of Escuintla and Baja Verapaz.
The population living in Sacatepequez has distinguished themselves with they work of religious pictures, the colonial constructions, sweets and products in leather.
In Chimaltenango, they are know for their products in mimbre and textile, like baskets, hamacs, nets and ropes. In Comalapa and Tecpan, they are specialized in products in silver.
This ethnic group is caracterized by its religious traditions, which are linked to the traditional dances. Each municipality has its own date dedicated to their saint.
The history of the Kaqchikels is linked to years of exploitation and internal wars.
